PH 201 Post-Lab 10

Impulse and Momentum

Name

Solution

Last week in lab we made similar plots in Capstone for carts colliding with various bumpers.  The photogate found a speed of 0.247 m/s for the cart before the collision and a speed of 0.072 m/s after the collision.

1. What is the change of momentum (Dp) for this cart collision?

Reading directly off the plot, the impulse which is equal to the change in momentum is

0.18 N s or kg m/s

0.18 kg m/s

2. What is the duration of time during which the cart was in contact with the bumper?  This was the Dt that you found last week

Reading the two times off the graph we get 1.752 s and 1.738 s

Subtracting them gets us Dt

à Over à

3. What was the mass of the cart?

Note Initial velocity is negative because it is pointing in opposite direction of final velocity.

4. What is the average force exerted by the bumper on the cart?
