*17.  A five-sided object, whose dimensions are shown in the drawing, is placed in a uniform magnetic field. The magnetic field has a magnitude of 0.25 T and points along the positive y direction. Determine the magnetic flux through each of the five sides.

Figure below identifies the five sides for reference.

So side 1 is the far triangular side, side 2 is the near triangular side and 3 is the bottom horizontal rectangle.  Since all three of the sides have normals that are perpendicular to the magnetic field, they have no flux passing through them.

 

 

Side 4 is the vertical rectangle so its normal is parallel to B

 

 

Side 5 is the slanted side so the picture below shows the normal and the angle in relation to the B field.

 

Since a + q = 90°, we know q = 90° - a, and we can find a from tangent.

 

 

 

Which means magnetic flux into object = 0.09 Wb and the magnetic flux leaving the object is also 0.09 Wb which it should be if there are no sources or sinks contained within the object!
